WordPress Guide: Why It Is Important To Set An Expiry Date/Time For Coupons

Coupons are the best way to drive lots of sales and also keep your customers happy. But you need to keep in mind that setting coupon expiry is very important. If you don’t set an expiry date, your customers can misuse the offer.

In this article, I will show you why it is important to set an expiry date/time for coupons and how you can set that.

Why it is important to set an expiry date/time for coupons

Maybe you are thinking, ‘I want as many possible users to use my coupons’, right? So, why set an expiry date/time is important.

But there should be a limit to using the coupon code. If you don’t set an expiry date/time, it could be normal for your customers.

If you offer coupons on a holiday or a specific occasion, then you have a set expiry date and time for your coupon code.

By default, WooCommerce allows you to set an expiry date for your coupon code. But, you can only set the date, you can’t set a specific time.

From the WooCommerce coupon setting side, you can configure coupons so they only work if customers spend over X or below Y amount. You will also be able to set coupons so they exclude items on sale and create offers that only work for specific products.

These features are good, but not great. That’s why Advanced Coupon comes. Advanced Coupon is the most popular coupon-building plugin for WordPress.

With Advanced Coupon, you can do all the things which you can’t do in WooCommerce default coupon settings.

So, that’s why we are going to use Advanced Coupon and set an expiry date and time.

So, let’s start.

Advanced Coupon has three different plans, which start from $39/year. You can choose any of their plans. But remember that, the more you pay, the more features you will get.

In their All-In-One Bundle, you also get their Loyalty Program plugin. A loyalty program inspires customers to keep coming back to your store, and it can even help increase the average spend per customer.

They also have a free version, so if you give it a try, you can do that.

They also have a 14-day money-back guarantee, so you don’t need to worry about it. If you don’t like the plugin, you can cancel your plan in under 14 days, which is cool.

How to set WooCommerce coupon expiry date and time

Before I start, make sure you already installed and activated the Advanced Coupon plugin on your WordPress website.

Advanced Coupon takes WooCommerce’s coupon functionality and improves it maximum way possible. You will get lots of options, including features that enable you to limit coupons so only specific user roles can get access to them.

Not only that, you are able to create coupons that apply with one click and codes which apply automatically.

You can also set a usage limit so it can be used a number of times before it expires.

Besides that, if you are thinking about it, I only use the time expiry feature. Then there is a surprise for you, you can do that also in their free version. So, only for that, you don’t need to buy their paid plans. But if you are a pro WooCommerce user, then I highly recommend you to go with their paid plan.

Once you have activated the plugin, go to Coupons > Add New and generate a coupon code.

Now scroll down at the bottom and select the Coupon data section and then select the Scheduler tab. Here you can set specific coupon start and expiry dates down to the minute.

With the Advanced Coupon plugin, you will also add error messages for your coupons in case shoppers try to use them outside of their working window. Which is a great option.

You can type the error message which you want, but make sure it can be clear for the customers. So, your customers can easily know why your coupons aren’t working and it is not the store’s fault.

Once you have set your coupon’s expiry date, you can decide what type of offer you want to run and save your coupon.

In the end, make sure your coupon’s expiry time that you set is based on the time zone from where your customers are from.

Every customer loves coupons, but if you don’t restrict them it could be a double-edged sword for your business. So, it is very important to set the expiry date and time on your coupon codes.
